Why Choose The St. Michael School?

WELCOME TO THE ST. MICHAEL SCHOOL

WHERE WE EDUCATE CHILDREN FOR LIFE

That may sound presumptuous, or even pretentious. Nonetheless, the point is we take the education of young children very seriously. We know that the experiences we have given our students have made a significant difference in their lives. Our students learn more than the fundamentals, the classic 3 R’s, reading, writing and arithmetic. They test as well or better than their peers in other schools and even more importantly, each graduate establishes patterns of behavior, learning, and living that become the foundation of their lives.

At The St. Michael School each child becomes:

* a thinker who listens,
* an inquirer who negotiates
* an inventor who collaborates, and
* an individual who believes in him or herself.

To accomplish this audacious goal The St. Michael School has evolved an educational program which balances traditional academics with innovative research projects. Even our building supports both the traditional in the solid structure of gothic stone and innovative in the maze of levels and variety of rooms. Dr. Angelo Bolea, a leader in the field of neuro-psychology and a consultant to our school, has said: The school actually functions the way the brain functions. Ideas in the brain move up, down and all around, the same way children flow in this marvelous building.

Our faculty and students engage in active research, real learning. Through these research projects children fulfill their innate desire to understand their world and to master ways of interacting in it. Each project revolves around questions of essential importance and vital interest such as: What is water? How do things fly? What is immigration? What is old? Through a multidisciplinary approach children apply cognitive, expressive and inventive skills to discover their theories and answers. Each project concludes with a high level communication of the ideas uncovered in their investigation. Examples of this communication cover the walls of the school. It is the ongoing history of our research. We view parents as an integral part of educating children. Parents, teachers and administration support the child to succeed and partner with him or her to achieve their very best. Students will often describe our learning as a three legged stool, parents, faculty, administration supporting the child.

I welcome you to come and visit The St. Michael School and begin to understand our approach to education. When you do, I’m confident that you’ll realize the lasting value of your child becoming a student at The St. Michael School of Clayton.

I look forward to meeting you soon.

Sincerely,
Beth Mosher, Head of School
