3-10-10 Comprehension Strategies in First Grade

During our Independent Reading Time, we have been talking about how to make reading more enjoyable than just reading word by word.  We have been practicing many strategies to help us understand the story better.  One of these strategies that we just recently practiced is called “Text to Self”.  When the children are dismissed to read to themselves they have an option to us a graphic organizer to help them with certain strategies.  The Thinking Cap Graphic Organizer helps the children understand how the events in the story relate to things in their own lives.  I found Edie reading the story Just Me and My Dad by Mercer Mayer this morning.  The story takes place on a campsite.  Edie, is our class camper, so she had so many experiences from the book to relate to her life.
