4.19.12, Learning About Rates and Unit Rates

Mrs. Bailey’s 6th grade math class is learning about ratios and rates. Specifically, they were learning the difference between rates and unit rates (unit rates have a denominator of 1. For example, miles per hour is a unit rate measuring how many miles you go in 1 hour).
To practice this skill, we began class outside on the playground. The students were asked to travel around the track for five minutes. Each time they passed the starting point, they were to put a counter in their assigned cup. This was to help them keep track of how many laps they had completed. Once five minutes was up, the students collected their cups and traveled back to the classroom.
Each student counted and recorded how many laps they had completed. This was their rate: how many laps in five minutes. They were then asked to calculate their unit rate: how many laps they completed per minute. These unit rate ranged from 1.8 laps to 2.8 laps.
This activity allowed us to calculate a rate using an experience the students participated in, as well as incorporate exercise into our math class.
