In science class, we’ve begun to explore how music can affect our feelings. We’re learning about the different elements of music, such as tempo, rhythm, melody, harmony, timbre, and major and minor chords and relating these elements to the emotions that music can evoke. This week, we listened to and described three musical selections that shared a melody but had other elements that changed the mood of the song.

Have a great weekend!

Our Favorite Color Day!

Everyone enjoyed wearing their favorite color to school today! George and Alex dyed their hair and Avi made a fun yellow hat! Can you guess what Havi’s favorite color is!

Language Arts:

The students are working their way through Walk Two Moons. They continue to participate in literature circles to discuss the chapters and the events that happen throughout the book. They have written a summary for chapters 1-10, and will begin the chapter 11-20 summary next week.

The students are developing their “musical persona,” or themselves as a musician. They have been asked to create their persona, as well as draw a self portrait of themselves as this person.

We start a new genre of music next week: Classical and Opera

Math:

The students took a test on chapter 5 this past week. Each student did a great job. They should be very proud of themselves!

We have begun Chapter 6- Adding and Subtracting Fractions. We will be working through this chapter over the next week.

Practiced conversation about going on a trip to South America.

Science:
The students are plugging away at their science project research. Students have been busily reading, taking notes, outlining, and organizing notecards, and some students are now writing the first draft of their reports. Once they have written a few drafts, the next step is to decide on a project they would like to pursue and complete a project proposal. Because the students chose project topics based on their interests, they have been quite invested!

2.26.10 Junior Kindergarten Reading Buddies & more…

2.26.10, Kindergarten Journal

Today was pajama day in Kindergarten! The students wore their favorite pajamas to school. In Performing arts class, the students acted out scenes using pirate music and a treasure box!

2-26-10 Dr. Seuss’ Birthday

In honor of Dr. Seuss’ Birthday on March 2nd, the first grade will participate in many Seuss related activities including reading books, poems, estimating fish, graphing fish, eating a special red and white snack, counting pairs of socks.. two by two, etc.  The morning will start with a special breakfast of green eggs and ham.  Make sure your child is not late on Tuesday….. I  wouldn’t want them to miss out:)

Corey had the science bag this week.   He did an experiment titled:  Drop Out!  He dipped strips of paper in water and then one in oil.  A drop of food coloring was then placed on each of the strips.  The drop of food coloring on the oiled paper sat on the surface while the drop on the water-dipped strips spread out.  Corey told the students that the oil is too sticky… so the drop sticks like a little ball and the water is just WET.  We were amazed to see that water and oil act differently!! They were all very excited that they each got a turn to squeeze the dropper onto the strips of paper.
