8-31-09 Homework…third grade

Your student received a reading log.  Please fill out the reading log each evening and return at the end of the month.  There is a typo at the top.  It should read 20-30 minutes not 15 minutes minimum.

I will be giving the children a developmental spelling assessment.  Each student will be given spelling words that are consistent with where they are developmentally in terms of word study.  I will be giving this assessment later this week and hope to start spelling afterwards.

DUE by THURSDAY:  Bring in books to read for your book box.

Aquarium Research:  DUE THURSDAY

Please locate sources for the following information, read and be prepared to present the information with the class on Thursday.  These are questions that you brainstormed in class today and felt needed answered to set up our aquarium.  You will be receiving a grade for this assignment.  It is important that all students are responsible in finding their information to help set up the aquarium for our classroom.  Parents, please assist your child in finding the information.  Do not do it for them.  Thanks!

8-31-09 First Day of First Grade

We had a great start to First Grade:)  This morning we went over our routines and procedures after reading the story, “The Night Before First Grade”.  We toured the school with a ABC Scavenger Hunt, we have new bathrooms and drinking fountains to go to this year.  We spent a long time discussing behavior and our reward/consequence system.  Make sure to ask your child what level of behavior they should strive to be on at all times.  Our Writers Workshop started today with the children telling stories and putting them on paper….. that is what writers do of course!!  We each learned of interests and stories of our classmates.  Our read aloud for this week is Junie B. Jones First Grader at Last.  Be sure to ask why Junie was disappointed on her first day of school. I don’t think any of my first graders were disappointed today!  We were all very excited to be back with each other and to have a couple other boys join our crew.  We all landed on stars for the day and even received a couple of compliments from other teachers.

8-31-09 Monday News and Notes…third grade edition

Dear Families,

I know I have said this, but it is so good to be back with this group of children.  They are truly a kind and hard working group of kiddos.  And smart…. very very smart.  I LOVE this group!

I have soooo much to share with you, but I’m going to dish it in small portions.  I will post curriculum info this week, but for now let’s discuss how our day was and homework…

Second Grade - First Day 8.31.09

Dear Helpful Husky Families,

We had a great start to the year with a donut social, dancing in Performing Arts and a scavenger hunt in both Science and our own Second Grade classroom!  We discussed personal goals and our hopes for this year.  Your child has a little homework for you tonight, though the due date is this Friday :)  One is a permission form for walking field trips, the other the Second Grade Please Let Me Know form as discussed in my back to school email.  Hope everyone has a relaxing night and remind those kiddos to get lots of rest-we have another fun, jam-packed day tomorrow!

Welcome to Studio! - 8.31.09 - Schwall

Welcome new and returning families!  I am so excited to begin another year at The St. Michael School.  In the studio this week, the JK children are making paper collages, and the KG and First Grade students are beginning work with clay.  Each studio group is also learning about the areas of the studio environment, such as the water fountain, the drawing shelf, the easel, and the light table.  We will use these areas in many important ways this school year. - Schwall

8.31.09 5th Grade Homework

Identity Board :  Due Tuesday, September 8th

Welcome back to the 2009-2010 school year!  I am so happy to have you as a part of our class.  This year is sure to be a fun and exciting time, filled with lots of memories.

To get to know one another better, you are creating an “identity board” to display information about you and your family.  Your board must contain the following:

  • a picture of yourself
  • pictures or words of what you like to do

Have fun, be creative!

We are excited to get to know you through your board!  Your board will be hanging outside our classroom door for everyone to get to know the members of our class.
