Big Book of the Week: Across the Stream
This past week the children had many rich literacy experiences which were based on the book, Across the Stream by Mirra Ginsberg. As we read and reread the book about a hen and her chicks’ escape from a hungry fox the kindergartners learned to tell, memorize, act out and, in some cases, read the story. They also gained experience in distinguishing the beginning, middle and end of a story. The students discovered rhyming words and realized that the words of the story created a rhythm that could be sung.
We discovered other books, stories and songs that are related to Across the Stream. For instance, the children read more books about farm animals and sang the ever-popular “Old MacDonald’s Farm.” We discussed the names of adult and baby animals (duck-duckling, etc.) and how farm animals are helpful to us (cows give milk, for example.)
