Duck Design
Ducks come in bold and goofy colors. Their feet are perfect for swimming in water or walking in mud. They wear a warm suit of waterproof feathers, and they have a flat beak that works great for sloshing in shallow mud for food.
This week in small group we will take a closer look at the duck. We will start by reading the story “Have You Seen My Duckling” by Nancy Tafuri. In this Caldecott Honor winner, a mother duck loses her eighth duckling, and asks the other pond animals for help (though the missing one is never lost, only cleverly concealed in each picture). From here we will discuss the water proof feathers and do a little experiment using some real feathers and water. Make sure to ask your child why the water runs off the feather. We will talk about the web feet and make our own version of duck tracks using two spatulas and paint to waddle across the paper. To culminate our “duck talk” the children will make their own beak out of tasty…… Pringles Potato Chips: Quack, Quack, Quack.

Turtles
Over the past few weeks we have been learning about pond life and what lives in and around the pond. This week our focus is on turtles. We have chosen a few poems, songs and books about turtles to help and introduce this topic to the children.
Our Pet Turtle
During our small group we will be reading the story “Turtles” by Melvin and Gilda Berger. This story tells us all about the different types of turtles and adventures they go on. After our discussion on the story we will create our own pet turtle to take home and enjoy.
Our Five in a row series is “Turtle Splash” by Cathryn Falwell. This is book that helps us to count down as ten turtles get scared away into the pond.
