Friday night was a great night THANK YOU FOR ATTENDING. We love when the parents visit the school. I enjoyed visiting the rooms and watching the children dance with each other and with their parents. As research has shown the two most important factors in determining success in school for children are positive relationships with parents and a feeling of school community. Thanks for helping to build a sense of community at SMS.

The Three R’s
With last week being Earth Day, we thought we would do our part and start introducing the students to the three R’s: Reduce, Reuse and Recycle. Our mission this week is to help the students become more aware of our environment and introduce ways we can start to make a difference.
Making Our Pledge
After reading the story of Where Does all of the Garbage Go? by Melvin Berger and listening to a song by Jack Johnson on the three R’s we will discuss what we can do both as a class and at home to help and make to make a difference.
Our Five in a row series is Where Does all of the Garbage Go? by Melvin Berger. This is a story that gives us a visual and helps is to understand where our trash goes when we throw it away and why it is important to Reduce, Reuse and Recycle.

Gifted Children Thrive at The St. Michael School
By Beth Mosher
It is amazing to watch the children at The St. Michael School in action. Our students use their strengths to succeed and to thrive. Gifted children succeed when they are placed in healthy competition. Children learn how to use their strengths and the strengths of their team members to accomplish goals. Games and collaboration encourage task organization, flexibility and analytical thinking. Students improve their social skills because the format, which required them to work cooperatively, foster participatory decision-making and teamwork help them to thrive acaemically and socially. Not everyone understands how crucial it is for gifted children to spend time each week studying and socializing with their intellectual peers. There is an unfortunate national trend to decrease the opportunities gifted children have to work with their intellectual peers. At The St. Michael School students are allowed to interact with their gifted peers on a daily basis. Creativity and problem solving is fostered. Students are not just given information but are provoked to find answers on their own. I recently attended a workshop at The Gifted Resource Council. At the workshop I listened to educators address the importance of gifted children working with their gifted peers to succeed, to problem solve and to research together. I invite you to take an hour and witness the gifted minds at SMS. If you have not witnessed Hub at SMS I encourage you to do so soon.
Family Night
Family night is almost here and we are getting very excited. We wanted to send out a quick e-mail informing you of what to expect. Families are allowed to show up to the school anytime after 5:00 PM on friday night for snacks and socializing. The actual program will start at 6:00 PM. At that time you will be able to come into the classroom where we will be making discovery bottles and squishy bags. We will have all of the supplies needed to complete these projects in the classroom, so just bring yourself and be ready for a good time. This part of the program will last until 6:45 P.M. At this time we will all head upstairs to the Taylor room for a dance ending at 7:30 P.M. We look forward to seeing each of you, so please be sure to RSVP as soon as possible to Jeff so we can be sure to have enough materials for everyone.
