This week, third graders made careful observations of either of camel cricket or a fire bellied toad in the classroom. Each student was asked to look for similarities between themselves and one of these critters. They really surprised themselves and me by coming up with a HUGE list of similarities! One student commented, “We’re really more like them than I thought!”

For homework this weekend, they are to watch it again with a parent and discuss what the song means to them.

On Monday the student needs to turn in at least five sentences about the video/discussion.  I would also like each parent to turn in at least five sentences about the video/discussion on Monday!

Dear Kindergarten Families,

We had a great second week of kindergarten! The students are getting to know each other and have discovered many of the classroom areas and activities. Below is a summary of what is happening next week in Kindergarten.

Math: The students will continue sorting objects by observing one or more attributes as well as classifying them through the use of logical reasoning. In math groups, the students will sort shapes by size, shape, and color. Students will be making pairs using color tiles and counters. The students will also use objects to learn the words More Than and Less Than.

Literacy: The students will clap, snap, spell, and write word family words. The word family this week will be -AM words: bam, ham, Sam, ram, yam, clam, slam. Sight words will be: I, is, My. The students will be using the sight words they are learning in small reading groups and during writing workshop. In small groups, the students will play literacy games: Chime with Ryme, Tell A Story, and Beginning Sound Bingo.

Writer’s Workshop: Last week the kindergarten students wrote and drew pictures about themselves and their family. This week, the kindergarten students will write closed sentences using sight words. Their sentences will be I like- I feel- My day is- In Fall-. The students will also have a choice to share their journal writings with the class later in the day.

Studio: Coil Animals using clay. The students will also make a birthday gift for a child in the classroom.

PE: Running drills and orienteering

Spanish: Discover how much Spanish students already know.
Practice greetings and commands.
Review phrases used in the classroom.
Practice vocabulary in all kinds of convex.
Sing sing songs and play games to practice pronunciation and vocabulary.

Performing Arts: Duck Duck Goose (attending to others, coordination)
Animal Action Music (move like an animal, listening with a purpose)
stepping, hopping, leaping, counterclockwise and counterclockwise in time to a drum beat
everyone has a drum and drums a steady beat (collaborating with others, hand-eye-ear coordination

As you know, there is typically no homework over the weekend, unless there are fix-its or incomplete homework.  As we get into the swing of doing our homework, it is important that you help encourage your child to be independent while at the same time looking over their work and checking for completion.

If your child is bringing back work to finish or fix, please note I’ve circled what needs to be looked over.

If reading logs are returned to your child, it is likely that they did not record their nightly reading, or have forgotten to code how they are reading.  The reading logs are important for me to see how your child is reading at home : RA, SR, CRA, CRS (hence, the code provided).  Please have your child include this information in their logs.

I appreciate your cooperation in highlighting the importance of turning in quality work, done at an individual personal best.

Also this week we introduced and worked with activities in the Reading Corner, the Magnet Corner, the Listening Corner and the Computer Corner.  We are gearing up for our Grand Opening of all eight of our Literacy Corners.  Next week we will be learning about the Pocket Chart Corner, the Handwriting Corner, the Writing Corner and Word Work.
