The St. Michael School of Clayton

An Episcopal day school inspired by the Reggio Emilia Approach teaching to all faiths and all learning styles.

At The St. Michael School children discover their own potential and develop an understanding of their own learning style and a passion for learning that will persist throughout life. Children become a collaborative partner with teachers, parents, and other children striving to cultivate the creativity, curiosity and flexibility to thrive in an unpredictable and fast changing world. Students emerge as a kind, open-minded, spiritually aware individual with a lifelong love of learning. The St. Michael School attaches great importance to spiritual and physical well being. Every school day begins in the chapel, where children of all faiths are challenged to consider how they positively affect the lives of others. Every school day includes active play and a planned program of physical activity, focusing on health and overall fitness, rather than competition. Beginning at the pre-school level all children experience P.E. and the study of a second language, Spanish. Parents are invited to become active collaborators in their children’s education.

At The St. Michael School of Clayton each child becomes:

* a thinker who listens,
* an inquirer who negotiates
* an inventor who collaborates, and
* an individual who believes in him or herself.

Why Choose The St. Michael School?

WELCOME TO THE ST. MICHAEL SCHOOL WHERE WE EDUCATE CHILDREN FOR LIFE

That may sound presumptuous, or even pretentious. Nonetheless, the point is we take the education of young children very seriously. We know that the experiences we have given our students have made a significant difference in their lives. Our students learn more than the fundamentals, the classic 3 R’s, reading, writing and arithmetic. Though they test as well or better than their peers in other schools: even more importantly, each graduate establishes patterns of behavior, learning and living that become the foundation of their lives.

At The St. Michael School each child becomes:

* a thinker who listens,
* an inquirer who negotiates
* an inventor who collaborates, and

* an individual who believes in him or herself.

What is the Reggio Approach?

Reggio Emilia Approach
Printed from: Brainy-Child.com Make Your Child Smarter

Hailed as the best pre-schools in the world by Newsweek magazine in 1991, the Reggio Emilia approach to early childhood education has attracted the worldwide attention of educators, researchers and just about anyone interested in early childhood education best practices. Even the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC)’s revised version of developmentally appropriate practices (DAP) guidelines also included examples from Reggio approach. Today, Reggio approach has been adopted in USA, UK, New Zealand, Australia and many other countries.

Loris Malaguzzi (1920-1994) founded the ‘Reggio Emilia’ approach at a city in northern Italy called Reggio Emilia. The ‘Reggio’ approach was developed for municipal child-care and education programs serving children below six. The approach requires children to be seen as competent, resourceful, curious, imaginative, inventive and possess a desire to interact and communicate with others.

The St. Michael School has a time honored tradition that we cherish - Reading Buddies

Our students and faculty gather together as a community to read, play games, share snack or lunch. Relationships that form between the older and younger students during these gatherings are rich and genuine. Children look forward to spending time with their reading buddy. In chapel as we honor a birthday boy or girl children regularly raise their hands and state, ” He/she is a Great Reading Buddy.”

Reading Buddies are a wonderful way to learn about community. Different ages, different races, religion gather together on a weekly basis to share passions, love and fun. Read More

News from the Elementary Studio

How can art and printmaking teach us about diversity?

There are several constants throughout the year in the elementary studio. We work with clay and water color, and we make prints. These materials and the making process are always tied to the curriculum as well as to our hub topic: “community”. For this year’s printmaking project I asked the students to develop an image using the many themes of diversity in our community as their starting point.

News from the JK Studio

The Joy of Paint & Rollers

The JK students have been exploring the delight of paint rollers! Investigating the application and mobility of paint supports many opportunities for learning, such as dynamic physical knowledge of the world, observing the results of an action, and collaborating with others. As they worked, the children sometimes made references to streets, roads, or highways as they pushed a roller filled with paint across the large paper. AK said, “I am making a street to see what’s going on in the city!” - Schwall
